My name is Amber Sherman. I am from East Memphis. I am 22 years old and graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin with a degree in political science and legal studies. I work full time and plan to attend law school in the August. I want to practice family law or criminal defense law. I was born with a neurological disease. Now, I need maintenance medication and yearly MRIs. Before the ACA, I would have been kicked off my mother’s insurance at age 22. Being able to stay on my mother’s insurance until I’m 26 is very important to me. I already have student debt and cannot afford to purchase health insurance. Also, I plan to attend law school in August. First year law students cannot work. If I was not able to stay on my mom’s insurance until age 22 I would have to give up my dream of becoming an attorney to work and pay for my health insurance.
Lawmakers should not repeal the ACA without having a comparable, suitable replacement. The solution is to amend parts of the existing bill to make it better, not take it away and start over.
