House Republicans just passed a bill to repeal health care that cuts coverage, increases costs and eliminates protections, despite bipartisan opposition.
The Republican bill:
cuts coverage for 24 million people and raises premiums 20 percent, according
to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office
lets insurers charge 5 times more for people over 50, what the AARP calls
an “age tax.”
eliminates guaranteed protections for people with pre-existing conditions
according to the American Cancer Society and others.
And puts the health of 1 in 5 Americans who count on Medicaid, including seniors, children and people with disabilities, in grave danger.
While everyone else loses out, the wealthy and insurance and drug companies get $600 billion in new tax breaks.
That is why the people who know health care the best — the American Medical Association, the AARP, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the March of Dimes, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, among others — oppose this legislation.
House Republicans purposefully ignored the needs and wishes of their constituents and rushed this through without hearings or a CBO score because they know this is deeply unpopular. Only 17 percent of the American people support this proposal.
The public backlash at Republicans in Congress will only grow as people see they voted for premiums to go up and coverage to get worse or go away. People who voted for this will pay the price with their constituents.
The Senate needs to reject repeal and, instead, Republicans should work with Democrats to make health care better.
